KARÍTAS is a singer/songwriter, DJ from Borgarfjörður, Iceland who started writing songs in her early 20’s.
Growing up in the countryside, she started practicing the violin at the age of 4, then the piano, then eventually a few years later the guitar. She is the youngest of seven siblings who are all somehow involved in music and her grandmother, Soffía Karlsdóttir, was a well known beloved folk singer in Iceland back in the 1950’s.
Combining a dark, pop/rock melancholic vibe with a little R&B with the help of her producer, Dadykewl, she started off her music career as a DJ in 2015 and within a few months she was playing at nightclubs every weekend in downtown Reykjavík.
In 2018, she joined the rap-collective Reykjavíkurdætur as their DJ but quickly also became a singer, rapper in the group.
Releasing her first single in April 2019, Wear Somebody Else, off her debut EP “Songs 4 Crying”, The Reykjavík Grapevine wrote about the single and described it as follows: “with a light touch, she muses about her desire to be somebody else, all while the quiet harmonies surround the listener, enveloping them in the sensation of wanting”.
